Sophie Miller is the mother of Wakara, age 15, and has lived here in Eugene on and off since Wakara was born. She has also lived in the Bay Area, New Orleans, and Austin, she has touched numerous lives in several of these communities. She is a hard working single mom and is an extremely talented artist and musician. She may have been your sound person, played a set that blew your mind, served you a drink at Old Nicks or got you to sing along with her around a campfire in the woods. You probably know her as one of the kindest, sweetest, and helpful friends you have.
“So here is the deal. I am sick with a rare disease with a really stupid name, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. It is a reaction to a medication. Basically my skin has decided to shed from my body. It is blistering up and then peeling off. The nurses have wrapped my body in bandages dipped in silver to protect me from infection. They dampen the bandages down a few times a day to activate the silver. I have spent the last two weeks in the burn unit at the Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. I am really thankful for all you dear friends. I get much strength from all your kind words and hearing from people, Thanks again everyone.”
Stevens–Johnson syndrome, a form of toxic epidermal necrolysis, is a life-threatening skin condition, in which cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis. The syndrome is thought to be a hypersensitivity complex that affects the skin and the mucous membranes. The most well-known causes are certain medications, but it can also be due to infections.
Sophie is one of my dearest friends, I met her when she was pregnant with Wakara, we have traveled the country and lived together. She is now home from the hospital in Eugene, in which she spent the last 11 days in the burn unit. She has a significant amount of medical bills that OHP (medicaid) may not cover. Prior to this illness she was often working 2-3 jobs. She needs help to meet her expenses such as rent and bills, in addition to the medical bills.
